Education

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Anthropology University of Queensland, St Lucia. Thesis title: Deebing Creek and Purga Mission: Identity, Resistance, Change and the Intercultural. Bachelor of Arts Anthropology and Indigenous Studies. Minor in Psychology and Archaeology. University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba

Experience

I have been tutoring students from primary, secondary and university levels since 2014. Anthropology grades were distinction or higher. My thesis study explored Aboriginal cultural identity associated with Deebing Creek and Purga Missions located in southeast Queensland. In particular, it analyses how useful the historical record is at identifying cultural identity and change. Merlan’s notion of ‘the intercultural’ (and the associated debate) is used to consider human engagement and the transformation created from the interaction between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. The study argues that Aboriginal identities at the Missions, constructed by relational and structural power ultimately reshaped identity through reinvention of new ideas from non-Aboriginal people and Aboriginal people to then be applied to Aboriginal traditional structures. Central to the construction of Indigeneity is a formulation of values both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal that shape what it means to be Aboriginal and how to still be Aboriginal in the context of assimilation pressures. Experience in archaeology, history, psychology, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage. I have demonstrated experience with Queensland legislation, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003, and Torres Strait Cultural Heritage Act 2003. Practical experience includes : ethnographic field work, archaeology excavations, laboratory analysis, liaising with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups. Currently work for Queensland State Government.
